Community Prayer Breakfast
The Community Prayer
Breakfast, originally called the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast,
started in America in 1952 to garner support from the diverse
populations for prayer for cities. In Columbus, the Valley
Interaction Ministry began Prayer Breakfasts in the late 1980’s
that brought together similar groups to support the idea.
Former Mayor Frank Martin revived the “Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast”
idea in 1991 that grew into large interracial gatherings with
local and out of town speakers. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast
continued to be a unifying force in the Columbus community,
supported by Mayor Bobby Peters and now Bob Poydasheff. In mid
2002, the Valley Interaction Ministry became part of One
Columbus and the Community Prayer Breakfast has been sponsored
by that organization ever since. Current Chairperson is Rose
Stanback, board member of One Columbus. A donation of $3.00 is
asked for the breakfast.
One Columbus was born out of an invitation from an
African-American Baptist preacher to an Episcopal priest to
jointly develop a unity service for all citizens in Columbus,
Georgia. From these humble beginnings, the mission of One
Columbus now is to help individuals find common ground around
which they can gather and expand the good will that exists in
Columbus and the region.
The One Columbus vision is of a united community embracing all
people, giving every citizen a way to participate meaningfully
in the activities and decisions that shape community life.
