Lonnie Jackson - One
of Columbus’ giants moves on to his just reward.
Columbus lost one of its committed giants this past week.
Lonnie Jackson, dedicated, committed, and a
“I-wont-take-no-for-an-answer” guy when it came to his
tutorial programs has gone on to his well deserved rest.
During “Lonnie Jackson week” (which I just created) I hope
there will not be one scrap of paper, one can, or a fast food
napkin anywhere to be seen in our city. I think Lonnie
deserves at least that.
His pledge still rings
in my head.
1.
I shall never knowingly, willingly, or
intentionally litter.
2.
I shall do all that I can to keep my
school, my place of work, and my community clean and
beautiful.
3.
I shall work with schools, churches,
youth groups, and other organizations that are engaged in
anti-litter and beautification projects.
4.
I shall help make my community the
cleanest in the State of Georgia.
5.
If I am not an adult, I shall get
permission from my parents and shall work under safe
conditions supervised by responsible adults.
6.
So help me I shall, I shall, I shall.

SPECIAL APPEAL
Mentors Needed for
Wynnton’s Arts Academy
One Columbus has teamed
up with Big Brothers/Big Sisters to provide mentors for the
Arts Academy at Wynnton Elementary School. There are nearly
400 youngsters PreK through 5th grade who could use
positive adult contacts and one-on-one support in several
settings at the school. You may even get to eat lunch with
them!
Positive mentoring
experiences have proven to be an effective tool to help young
people overcome the risk factors that can lead to problems
such as educational failure, dropping out of school and
involvement in delinquent activities.
To give at least an hour
a week can pay enormous dividends to the kids, to the school,
the families involved and to the mentors themselves.
Send your name and how
best to contact you to
onecolumbus4@msn.com
or call me. After a brief orientation, you will be matched
with a child and you are on your way.
