Race:
Still Our Most Divisive Force
NPR
Series Looks at the Pros, Cons of Bipartisanship
National
Public Radio's "Crossing the Divide"
explores the pros and cons of bipartisanship in Washington,
and features examples of compromise and cooperation from
politics, business and everyday life in America.
One
of the most powerful stories in the series was an essay done
by Juan Williams titled "Race:
Still the Most Divisive Force."
You
can hear it by clicking on npr.org and then
"Crossing the Divide" in the search space bar.
From there you can click on the essay.
After
listening to Juan Williams and comments by Lyndon Johnson,
Ronald Regan, John Kennedy, Martin Luther king, Jr. and
others, you may want an opportunity to express your own
opinion on this and other issues by signing up for a One
Columbus Dialogue Group that starts in February. Go to our
website at www.onecolumbus.org,
or call 706-315-0162 and leave your name and number. We'll
get back to you with time, date and place.
Volunteers
needed for "Kindergarten Readiness"
The
Literacy Alliance needs 90 volunteers for their next session
of Kindergarten Readiness: which runs March 19 thru May 11. Their
partnership with C S U's Honors Program and Phi Kappa Phi
chapter will provide many of these, but they need more in
order to serve the target schools for Spring 2007.
Can
you offer one hour one morning a week for eight weeks to do
some one-on-one literacy/reading activities with two pre-k
students? No special teaching skills required.
You will see positive changes in these students whose lives
you touch by just a little of your time. It is most often
evident in an increase in classroom participation.
Kindergarten Readiness volunteers give these students
confidence. This is one of the keys to success in the
class room.
