Sunday,
May 13: Mother's Day.
In 1914,
President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed 'Mother's Day'
a national holiday to be recognized on the second Sunday of May.
To all mothers we wish them the best on this special day set
aside to recognize them. Thank you, mothers all.
The origins
of Mother's Day goes back to the ancient Greeks where the
concept of celebrating motherhood was to pay tribute to the
Mother of the Gods. In the 17th century,
England
honored mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
In the United
States, Julia Ward Howe established Mother's Day in 1872
dedicating the day to peace; however, it was Anna Jarvis who is
credited with bringing about the official observance of
'Mother's Day' as a remembrance of her own mother who died in
1905.
Jarvis
campaigned to adopt a formal holiday in 1910 when
West Virginia
became the first state to recognize Mother's Day. By 1914,
nearly all states officially adopted Mother's Day.
