4th
Annual Recognition Dinner
One
Columbus will be eternally grateful to the
Sponsors , Friends of One Columbus, its
board of directors and Advisory Committee members
and the dozens of volunteers who made the 4th
Annul Recognition Dinner a success.
The
upscale reception provided a unique opportunity
for the Dinner guests to meet the speaker, Morris
Dees, the Mayor of Montgomery, and key leaders
from that city. Dee's presentation, complimentary
of Columbus and the work being done by One
Columbus, was preceded by awards to Janice Wilson
who received the Richard R. Miles Youth award.
Dan
Amos received the Community Excellence Award for
his work at Aflac and his leadership regarding
diversity.
Morris
Dees, Jr., co-founder and chief trial counsel for
the Southern Poverty Law Center referred to Martin
Luther King and the work that he did during the
early years of the civil rights struggle. He
challenged his listeners to take the next step now
that many of the walls of discrimination have been
broken down. It's time to go inside, and take
advantage of the opportunities . Referring to the
children of Israel "who wondered for 40
years, once they reached the promised land, they
didn't have the courage to go inside, "
Dees
said that "we're still sitting on the river
bank looking at the promised land on the other
side."
With
trust, hope, understanding, and a continuing
of the conversation around the table among all
cultures at all economic and social levels will
ensure the future of America as it becomes an increasingly
diverse nation, he said.
More
about the dinner will be uploaded to the website
next week.
