Items of Importance

ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE    IOI080404

Friday, April 4, 2008

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in Memphis, Tennessee. At 39 years old, Dr.King was making an impact on America that few could have predicted. He is remembered by many for his "I have a dream" speech but his work premeates every facet of life in America and all over the world. The love of man about which he preached and his desire for democratic dialogue among all men toward a better understanding among them are the bricks and mortal upon which One Columbus is founded. We've come a long and we honor King on this day for the work that he did during his lifetime.

The Bridge Church International Dedication

On Easter Sunday morning, March 23, 2008 the congregations of Pastor Vince Allen (traditionally African American) and Pastor Chris Mitchell (traditionally Euro American) took a bold and courageous step by joining together to create The Bridge Church International. A truly unique merger, these two institutions, now one, see their mission as bridging gaps in the community by connecting their members with God. A 10:00 am on Sunday, April 6, the formal dedication service takes place.  One Columbus' theme is "Building Bridges . . Connecting People." The birth of The Bridge Church International is about as close as you can come to fulfilling that hope.

April MIXER

We hear from our readers that seeing the Items Of Importance on the Friday before the Monday MIXER does not give them enough time to plan so they can attend.  In response, we announced our April MIXER last Friday and hope that plan to come on Monday. Learn about One Columbus and make a personal contribution of time if not money. April's MIXER is Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Government Center ANNEX. It starts at 11:00 am. It's open to the public.

Dialogue Group

The First Presbyterian Dialogue Group doubled its numbers last Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm where some of the challenges facing our school teachers were put squarely on the table. Where do you go for answers to these questions?  How do you get parents to turn off the TV? Do children really come to school hungry? How much sleep do our elementary school children get every night?  Enough? What does exercise (or the lack there of) do for our kids?  The group is open to the public and willing to listen. Use the Second Avenue entrance across from the CB&T parking garage.
