TUESDAY, July 15, 2008 - Voting Day

The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political organization that encourages active involvement in the political process and especially in the act of voting.  It sees voting as a precious right of eligible voters and has been providing voter guides at election time for years.

They want to "get people interested in voting and to give them the tools to be able to make their own choices, " according to Polly McKinney, LWV of Georgia's president.

To make this happen, they have developed, with the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, an online guide ajc.com/voterguide  that will walk you through the state-wide candidates that are running , their points of view, and answers to questions posed to them so that you can compare the candidates for whom you will be voting. Hopefully, this will help you make informed choices.  There really isn't any excuse for not being knowledgeable and certainly not for voting on Tuesday.

For more information about the League of Women Voters of Georgia, go to lwvga.org. Local LWV contact is Doris Halouska at 706-322-4636 or dmhalouska@aol.com.

For information about local candidates and races, do the following:

Click on www.columbusga.org  then  scroll down on the left hand side to "departments"  then click on "Elections and Registration Office," then click on "sample ballots" and find your precinct.  You may want to print off the ballot and take it with you on Tuesday.

THURSDAY, July 17, 2008 - Dialogue Group

To accommodate summer schedules, the First Presbyterian Dialogue Group will meet each week on THURSDAYS until August 7, 2008.

DOWN TO ROAD

Race Relations Breakfasts will continue on the Second and Fourth Wednesdays during July and August this year.

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 - Race Relations Breakfast

Our fifth of the series "My Challenges with Race" will feature Claudya Mueller, Director of the Chattahoochee Valley  Regional Library System. With degrees from Georgia State University and Emory University, and broad knowledge at all levels of library administration, Claudia orchestrated the design, development, building and now operation of the CVRLS since her coming to Columbus in 2001. Her broad experiences in the MidWest, East and South give her an interesting perspective on her work as she addresses the topic "The Influence of Race on the Development of the CVRLS."

The Race Relations Breakfasts are held at Ruth Ann's on Veterans Parkway. Breakfast begins at 7:30am and you are encouraged to bring a friend with you. $6.00 is asked of regular members.  First timers and visitors are our guests.
