Friday, April 10 - Funeral Services for One Columbus board member Pastor Joe Andrews at noon

One of One Columbus' newly elected board members, Pastor Joe Andrews passes away on Monday, April 6 at St. Francis Hospital. Among the many roles that Pastor Joe played included liaison for One Columbus to the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance where he served as president. For 18 years he served as pastor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church and inaugurated the MLK Memorial Service held each January on Martin Luther King Day.

We will miss him and offer our sympathies to his family, friends and his church members.

Spring Break, Easter and Passover

Sara Winner suggests that from the earliest known evidence of human religion by Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis around 100,000 years ago to the present day, religion continues to be a very influential aspect of human lives.

Today, there are numerous challenges and problems faced by humans from every possible background, location and social class. Every day people must face issues of health, safety and mortality. It is because of these daily challenges that religion continues to exist. Religion is the universal tool for explaining things which we do not understand through the context the known physical world.

Although there are countless religions, each different from the other, they all serve the same purpose. Each answers questions which all humans seem to be programmed to ask: Why are we here? What happens when I die? How shall I live my life?

Religion helps us to transmit our values from one generation to another, and influences the way we interact with the natural environment. It teaches us how to see ourselves in light of the universe and gives purpose and meaning to life.

With our global society, it is likely that in your lifetime you will meet people from every corner of the planet. Understanding the religious beliefs of these people is one of the many steps which mankind must take in order to someday prosper together in peace.

There are probably 5 or 6 major religions of the world, many celebrating this period in different ways. Some of these are: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, Christianity, and Judaism.

During this special time of the year, there are many celebrations that take place in some of these religions.

For our Christian friends, it's Easter which is an important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Many Christian denominations celebrate this resurrection on Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday.

For the Jewish community it's Passover - a festival commemorating God sparing the Hebrews when he killed the first born of Egypt, and is the seven day Feast of the Unleavened Bread  which lasts eight days.  It commemorates the Exodus from Egypt and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery.

For information about other religions, see your Wikipedia or google 'religions of the world."

If One Columbus' mission is to apply to One World, there's a lot to learn in a short period of time.

But there's always hope - little gems that help move us forward..

Monday, April 13 - "Come To The Table" features former Ku Klux Klan member

Here's an email from Susan Minarcine, Chair of "Come To The Table" in  Newnan, Georgia

"The April 13 meeting of Come To The Table promises to be interesting and thought-provoking, as our guest will be Elwin Wilson, former member of the Ku Klux Klan.  Wilson will discuss his background and his apology to Rep. John Lewis, whom Lewis attacked in a bus station in 1961.  Wilson's apology was televised on CNN and has spurred others to recognize the ignorance and futility of their hatred.

It is not easy to sit with someone who has committed these horrible acts, but those of us who visited Wilson in his Rock Hill, S.C. home came away feeling he was "the real deal" and was sincere in his apology and in his commitment to make things right.

We hope to have a good turnout for this meeting.  Please invite your friends and neighbors so that we can share dinner and reach a new understanding.

We meet at 6:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Roscoe Road in Newnan, Georgia.  If you would like any further information on our meeting, please contact me via email or call me at 678.423.1989 (home) or  678.633.0186 (cell).

Thank you!"
