One Columbus Golf Tournament - An Appreciation Moment

To the sponsors, advertisers, contributors, and players who made a good day a really great one, we want to thank you. This was the fourth consecutive year that One Columbus sponsored this sporting event for golfers in this region and through the generosity of Lee Brantley, WTVM and Raycommedia, chair Rev. Allen Page, III and the work of D. J. Jones and Diamond Sports Marketing, we're already looking forward to the 5th annual event. We're truly grateful for your support of the 4th.

Saturday, July 4 - Independence Day

This US national holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks parades, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

For me, it is always interesting to review the background and origins of the Declaration of independence, but I am saddened when I listen to too many of our young people try to describe its document and how and why it came to be.

To think that the colonies, breaking away from Great Britain, have become the republic of the United States of America with all its faults, imperfections, achievements and challenges stands as a uniquely successful experiment in freedom and justice for all those who find themselves living in this land.

Events and Activities

NEW this year is Do the Dew Obstacle Course by Buffalo Rock Pepsi and Piggly Wiggly!

You can purchase crafts, hand-made jewelry, leather goods, art and much more. Food vendors with barbeque, funnel cakes and snow-cones will satisfy both adults and kids.

Great family entertainment begins in the Phenix City Amphitheater at "The God and Country Celebration" at 7 pm with the fireworks at dusk!

For other activities on Saturday, check the WTVM website and see the "To Do" section of the Ledger Enquirer

Two of the dozens of places that you may want to visit over the weekend are: Port Columbus

Back in 2001, the Confederate Naval Museum became Port Charlotte where the salvaged wreck of CSS Jackson (built in Columbus) is housed and where civil war surgery will be demonstrated this weekend - one of the museum's most popular programs. This national landmark has had visitors from every state and many foreign countries. It's well worth your and your family's time.

National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center

Opened on June 19, this is a beautiful facility that includes a museum of the US foot soldier from his earliest days, an IMAX theater, and am excellent restaurant.

With over 30,000 visitors already registered, we here in the Valley, if asked, should be able to say, "Yes, I've been there."
