". . . Changing the complexion . . . and atmosphere. . ."
Thanks to our United Way agencies, houses of worship,
businesses large and small, social organizations, and many
private institutions, thousands of our young people get a chance
to go to "summer camp." Some go to the pool at the local Y. Some
learn to canoe on the lakes in North Georgia, and some learn to
ride horses, get really close to mother nature and see the
countryside. Others, with their families, may visit the ocean or
view the hundreds of sights that a city like Washington, DC
offers.
Summer is, for kids, the 'great get away' from the classroom
and the formal structured week that is a part of life beginning
in the fall.
What's offered is fun time and a great way to have their
vacation - whatever that may mean for each.
Constructive, healthy summertime activities are a natural,
positive part of every child's upbringing.
It was this idea that camp director Aetha Wright of the
Creative Steps Day Camp contracted with the Valley Swim Club in
Philadelphia for the use of their pool.
John Duesler, President of the Club, in denying them use of
pool and offering to refund the money afer the first day,
released a statement saying "There was concern that a lot of
kids would change the complexion . . . and atmosphere of the
club."
John:
There are teachable moments and then there are teachable
moments. Some come only once in a lifetime!
N. B. Girard College, thanks for saving the day. As your
admissions officer said "Every child deserves an incredible
summer camp experience"
