Dan
Amos to receive Community Excellence Award
The
Fourth Annual One Columbus Recognition Dinner is scheduled for
Thursday, January 24, 2008, which will be a celebratory end to a week
of events that start with Martin Luther King Jr's birthday.
This
year's dinner will feature Morris Dees, Jr., founder and Chief Trial
Counsel for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. He
achieved extraordinary business and financial success with his book
publishing company, but sold his business to found the Center to
become actively involved in civil right law. Dees, the son of an
Alabama farmer, witnessed the painful consequences of prejudice and
racial injustice and dedicated his life to the crucial work of
fighting for civil rights and promoting tolerance.
The
flagship event for One Columbus, the dinner will also honor one of the
Columbus' leading citizens for his work in promoting diversity
- Aflac's Dan Amos.
Dan
Amos, chairman and chief executive officer of Aflac joined the company
in 1973 and worked in the sales area for 10 years. He was named
president of Aflac in 1983, chief operating officer in 1987, chief
executive officer of Aflac Incorporated in 1990, and chairman in 2001.
Mr. Amos has received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Award and
the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty Award. He has also been
recognized by Institutional Investor magazine as one of the top
CEOs in the country, and was named by CNN as a CEO of the Week.
